EBMUD FINDS DANGER AND OPPORTUNITY IN CALIFORNIA’S ENERGY CRISIS

California’s energy crisis of 2000-2001 presented numerous rous challenges to wastewater treatment plant operations throughout the state. The initial challenges included reliability o f power supply and increasing energy costs. The crisis also provided opportunities, in t he form of grants and rebates, for implementing energy efficiency projects and i ncreasing on-site power supply at wastewater treatment facilities. At the onset of the energy crisis, EBMUD started an energy management program and undertook a wide variety of demand reduction and power supply projects, completing some of them within a year. This paper describes several energy-related projects initiated during this period, their implementation and effectiveness, and how they were coordinated to optimize plantw ide energy efficiency.
