Self-assembled nanostructures with novel properties offer the possibility for low cost optoelectronic devices and have recently received significant attention as viable alternatives for emerging photovoltaic technologies. This article presents a review of on-going work by our group based on the use of self-assembled nanomaterials including porous nanostructured spheres, nanowire arrays, and quantum dots as building blocks for third generation solar cells.
