Electrochromic and thermochromic thin films and devices are of interest for energy efficient and comfort enhancing "smart" windows. This paper outlines the results of two recent studies: the first one deals with a laminated electrochromic device and shows, experimentally and theoretically, that the incorporation of ITO nanoparticles into the electrolyte can yield very efficient damping of the near-infrared part of the solar energy transmittance while allowing large electrically induced modulation of visible light; the second application shows by computation that composites of VO_2 and ITO can combine moderately low thermal emittance with temperature dependent modulation of the solar energy transmittance.
