A nano-coating and a coating process have been developed by SRI International and Averatek Corporation (an SRI spin-out company) that can be used to facilitate the vacuum deposition of copper with a strong bond on flexible polymers substrates without the need for a sputtered tie-coat of chromenickel alloys. This nano-coating can be used to facilitate the deposition of copper using chemical processes as well. The nano-coating is created by an innovative process that leaves a layer of catalytic material only a few nanometers thick on the surface of a substrate. This paper describes the benefits of using this nano-coating for both vacuum and electro-chemical copper deposition processes.
