Making lemonade from lemons: A case study of eradicating PRRS from a naive 650 sow two-site farm after an acute PRRS outbreak and simultaneously eliminating Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae
Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) is the most economically important viral disease to the U.S. pork industry with estimated costs of $664 million. Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, the causative agent of mycoplasmal pneumonia of swine, is also economically important with an estimated U.S. pork industry annual cost of $367 million. This is a case-study detailing the management of a PRRS outbreak and the effort to not only eradicate PRRS but also further increase the herd health status by also eliminating mycoplasmal pneumonia.
