It is common practice in commercial production to vaccinate pigs during the nursery period to reduce their susceptibility to disease during the finishing period. A recent commercial research study demonstrated that vaccinating nursery pigs with porcine circovirus type 2 at weaning and three weeks post weaning significantly improved performance and survivability during the finish period. In this study, mortality was less while average daily gain (ADG) and body weights were higher in vaccinated pigs than in unvaccinated pigs. While there are notable benefits of vaccination to pig longevity and performance, numerous field reports have indicated reductions in feed intake and growth rate during the nursery period due to vaccination. We recently reportedtrial results showing vaccination reduced ADG, average daily feed intake (ADFI) and final body weight. The current experiment was conducted to determine if administering Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs; Aspirin or Ibuprofen) through the water would mitigate the adverse effects of vaccination on nursery pig performance.
