PCV2 infection/disease in the breeding herd: An update

Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) is a ubiquitous virus circulating within the swine population worldwide and is considered one of the most economically devastating diseases if uncontrolled. PCV2 persistence within the host and protracted shedding is problematic for controlling transmission, and the virus is extremely difficult to remove from the environment. Furthermore, PCV2 infection can be subclinical within a population or result in clinical disease. PCV2 associated disease (PCVAD) can manifest systemically causing severe debilitation or be preferentially localized causing organ dysfunction with clinical signs; PCV2 pneumonia or enteritis are examples of the latter. Another potential outcome associated with PCV2 infection in adult swine is reproductive failure or vertical transmission.
