摘要

Deoxynivalenol, or DON, is a secondary metabolite produced by several molds of the Fusarium genus. Fusarium molds commonly colonize cereal grains in temperate climates. While Fusarium molds are common, climatic and environmental stressors can lead toan increase in the myco-toxins they produce. DON gets its common name "vomitoxin" from the emetic effects that occur in pigs consuming feeds with higher concentrations. Mild to severe reductions in feed intake are more commonly observed at lower DON concentrations. Complete feed refusal may also occasionally occur in pigs consuming DON-contaminated feeds. The negative effects of DON may be exacerbated by the presence of other mycotoxins. Recently, Chaytor et al. demonstrated that a mixed myco-toxin challenge containing as little as 548 ppb DON could reduce feed intake by 10-15% in 30- to 57-pound pigs. During the last 28 days of the nursery period in a typical group of pigs, the associated reduction in weight gain could be as much as five pounds per pig.
