This brief treatise is in response to questions often asked by hams or teacherswho are working on an ARISS application or are waiting for a contact to bescheduled. The answers here will help to ensure a successful application orcontact. The most successful contacts have been made with multi-element circularlypolarized antennas. The ARISS school selection committee considers technicalpossibilities and preparedness, and it is much more likely to approve anapplication that specifies this type of antenna. Further, the ARISS mentorassigned to the contact will recommend, if not insist, that it be used. An ISS passlasts for only ten minutes. A contact can certainly be made with an eggbeater, afour-element vertically polarized yagi, or even a quarter wave whip, but it won’tlast for ten minutes. A properly guided circularly polarized yagi will ensure tenminutes of contact.
