Summary: IHC examination of placental tissues can improve understanding of processes during pregnancy. The present study researches expression of growth factors, cytokines and apoptotic processes in the tissues of post-delivery placentas of various gestational ages. Growth factors IGF1, HGF and FGF-b and receptors IGFR1 and FGFR1 present variable expression in placenta; it depends on gestation and correlates with clinical findings. IL-10, the most potent human anti-inflammatory cytokine, has marked expression in placental tissues, more expressed in the presence of pro-inflammatory cytokine TNFa and decreasing with advanced gestation. Increased apoptosis of placental cells indicates pathological pregnancy.
