Uranium Magnetic Materials - Is It Possible?

Results of research collaboration between Joint Laboratory for Magnetic Studies in Prague, Czech Republic, and Institute for Materials Research, Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan, devoted to the magnetic properties of intermetallic compounds containing both uranium and a 3d metal (Fe, Co) are summarized and discussed. Although the ordered magnetism of the U and 3d-metal sublattices is shown to coexist in the same compound (e.g. with 2-17 and 1-12 stoichiometries) even at room and elevated temperatures, application potential of uranium compounds as magnetic materials is rather low.
