The magnetic properties of Sm-Fe alloys produced by the melt-spinning technique and subsequent annealing were examined. The wheel velocity, which is closely associated with the cooling rate, was varied in the production of the melt-spun ribbons. A fully amorphous material was obtained in the melt-spun ribbon produced at a wheel velocity of 30 m/s or higher. Heat treatment of the melt-spun ribbons at 1073 K resulted in formation of the Sm_5Fe_(17) phase. The amount of the Sm_5Fe_(17) phase in the annealed melt-spun ribbon was deeply dependent on the wheel velocity of the as-quenched melt-spun ribbon. A high coercivity of 25 kOe was achieved in the annealed Sm_5Fe_(17) melt-spun ribbon produced at a wheel velocity of 40 m/s, which consisted only of the Sm_5Fe_(17) phase.
