The Twelve Principles of Green Packaging

This paper is a study based on existing sustainability parameters to conceptualize concrete principles which can help towards achieving green packaging. The twelve principles have been developed with the aim of standardizing the green packaging process by laying down a step by step approach right from packaging material selection to waste disposal. In addition, these principles also include compliance with regulations, evaluating sustainable packaging and creating awareness among consumers. All parameters have been considered in this study to achieve balance between the three pillars of sustainability viz. environment, society and economics. The twelve principles could be used as a ready reference by companies in achieving green packaging. It is to be noted that, not all principles may be applicable to every packaging and allied industry. The relevant principles may be worked upon to their benefit moving towards packaging sustainability.
