Both process safety and fire protection engineering discipline aim to reduce the occurrence of incidents and limit the consequence to people, process, property and environment by taking preventive and mitigative measures. In nature, there is some common ground between two fields while many discrepancies exist due to their unique characteristics. This work provides an overview of the importance and implementation of process safety and fire protection engineering principles. Through several case studies, the intersection/interaction between process safety and fire protection engineering in safety practices were elaborated. In order to minimize the undesired events in process industries, there is an urgent need to form a "marriage" between these two disciplines and several recommendations on how to strengthen the collaboration and interaction between these two fields were made as well.
