Observing the development of modern agricultural machinery a trend towards larger and more powerful machines can be identified. Shorter harvest seasons, increased wages and continuously rising prices of fuel are the main reasons of this development. Therefore the efficiency of harvesting machinery is more and more focused during the development process. Parallel to these topics, which impact the operating costs, the need for higher efficiency of harvesting machinery is driven by political activities to reduce CO_2 emission. For example the German government committed to reduce the greenhouse gas emission about 40% till 2020 based on the data of 1990. Beside the German commitment, a discussion in the European parliament about the regulation of the CO_2 emission of agricultural machinery has been started. One approach to achieve efficiency improvements is characterized by introducing more sophisticated drive train technologies and also intelligent electronic system solutions. Today existing solutions already include steering systems or automatic throughput control. This publication presents a new concept to smartly run engines installed in harvesting machinery by providing exactly the amount of power that is momentarily needed.
