Optical Properties of Eu~(3+) Doped Lead Borate Tellurite and Zinc Borate Tellurite Glasses

This paper describes the synthesis and optical absorption studies of the glass system 20PbO-20TeO_(2)-(60-x)B_(2)O_(3)-x Eu_(2)O_(3) (x velence 0, 1 mol percent) and 20ZnO-20TeO_(2)-(60 - x)B_(2)O_(3)-xEu_(2)O_(3) (x(velence) 0,1 mol percent). These glass systems have been successfully prepared by the melt quenching technique. The X-ray diffractograms show broad peaks indicating glasses are amorphous. DSC thermograms show glass transition temperatures around 655K for PbO content and around 675K for ZnO content glass samples. In the UV-Visible spectra, several absorption lines are observed. The absorption peaks are around 362, 375, 393 and 464 nm for both Eu~(3+) doped PbO and ZnO content glass systems. These correspond to transitions from ground state of ~(7)F_(0) to the excited state of ~(5)D_(4), ~(5)G_(4), ~(5)L_(6) and ~(5)D_(2) respectively for both Eu~(3+) doped PbO and ZnO content glass systems. These glasses are expected to give interesting applications in the area of optical devices.
