METAL DISTRIBUTION AND MOBILISATION IN ARGENT SMELTING SLAG

The Argent mines and smelters formed part of the silver mining industry of the greater Pretoria region and were operational during 1885-96 and 1919-28. Today the blast furnaces and processing plants lie in ruins, and all that remains of the mine products are discarded slag and tailings dumps. Since the furnace types employed for lead-silver smelting have changed over time, a great variety of slag types are found in the area and these are associated with heavy metal leaching and secondary mineral formation.
