LEAF MICRO MORPHOLOGICAL PHYSIOGNOMY OF Hibiscus surattensis AND Hibiscus sabdariffa

The present study aims to investigate the abaxial and adaxial foliar surfaces of Hibiscus surattensis and Hibiscus sabdariffa for the micromorphological properties using various microscopy techniques. H. surattensis and H. sabdariffa belong to the section Fucaria, and are known for their therapeutic properties among Indian and African traditional healers. Touted as an all-round herbal remedy, Hibiscus sabdariffa is primarily used in the treatment of hypertension and cardiovascular ailments. Calyx extracts were shown to be equally effective in lowering blood pressure in moderate hypertension candidates, as the recommended medication, Captopril. Extracts show toxicity only at doses greater than that consumed by humans, affecting the hepatic and muscular systems. Numerous studies are conducted each year, investigating anti-cancer, anti-tumour and cholesterol lowering properties of H. sabdariffa. Hibiscus surattensis is used throughout Africa in the treatment of various sexually transmitted diseases as well as malaria and respiratory conditions. The leaves are consumed as a vegetable and may also be applied to wounds to accelerate healing. Despite its extensive range across Africa and India, Hibiscus surattensis has not been phytochemically evaluated.
