Natural gas is widely acknowledged as a fuel of the future due to its environmental credentials and the availability of the resource. Despite the current lack of a well established LNG infrastructure, it is competitively priced and expected to become still cheaper than fuel oil. As a manufacturer of gas engines and a supplier of integrated system solutions, including gas systems, Rolls-Royce is well placed to exploit this developing fuel. In combination with the Hybrid Shaft Generator electrical power generation system a vessel can be natural gas fuelled and operate in an extremely flexible, economical and environmentally friendly manner. In addition to propulsion, the main gas fuelled engine can also supply electrical power in port which is especially suitable for ships with short port calls. All power is therefore supplied by an efficient and low emission gas engine and no diesel generator sets need to be utilized in normal operation.
