Rare Earth trifiates RE(O_3SCF_3)_3 are commercially available compounds and widely used as environmentally benign Lewis acids. Nevertheless, their structures remain still elusive. The commercially available compounds are mostly nonahydrates showing the lanthanide cations coordinated homoleptic by water molecules. The trifiate anion functions only as a counter anion. Dehydration of these hydrates could change the coordination sphere towards trifiate coordination, but this couldn't be proved by structure determinations up to now[1].
