Classifying sodic soils: A comparison of the World Reference Base for Soil Resources and Australian Soil Classification systems

In this preliminary study, the World Reference Base (WRB) soil classification system is compared with the Australian Soil Classification (ASC) in order to establish the applicability of the former to Australian soils. Various differences in the structure of the two schemes using sodium-affected soils which cover much of Victoria indicate variation in profile classification and concomitant implications for mapping. Potential modifications to enhance both systems and facilitate the translation of datafor mapping are suggested.
