Triploid Populus tomentosa Carr., a deciduous species cloned from Populus tomentosa Carr. by Chinese forest scientists to meet the increasing demand of the global pulp and paper industry, belongs to genus of Populus (Salicaceae family), which has been extensively used as a plant resource for folk medicines to treat numerous diseases. However, chemical constituents and bioactive properties of triploid P. tomentosa have little been studied to date. The present study was mainly focused on investigating the secondary metabolites of triploid P. tomentosa wood by gas chromatographic and mass spectrometric (GC-MS) analysis. A total of 30 compounds were detected in this work, among which, N,4,5-trimethyl-2-nitro-phenylarnine (retention time: 12.609 min; characteristic ions: 180 and 91 m/z) was the most abundant (30.95%). Antioxidative effects of the 95% EtOH crude extracts and the resulted soluble fractions of triploid P. tomentosa wood were evaluated by hydroxyl radical scavenging assay. Results indicated that EtOAc and BuOH soluble fractions exhibited significant scavenging activities, comparing with Vitamin E, which was used as a positive control, while 95% EtOH crude extracts and H2O soluble fraction showed moderate efficiency. However, n-hexane and CH2Cl2 soluble fractions demonstrated weak or no antioxidative effects.
