Human identification requires short tandem repeat (STR) analysis, which, when completed using conventional methodology, is laborious and has lengthy turn-around times of 8 - 11 hours. Transition to the microfluidic platform will permit automation, integration, and an expedited analysis time. Previous work by our team has been presented but focused on development of PCR (polymerase chain reaction) amplification in a miniaturized format. The work here describes a plastic, multichannel microdevice developed for PCR followed by single-base resolution and detection of amplified STR loci from multiple samples.
