SPATIAL VARIATION IN LANDFILL GAS COMPOSITION IN SRI LANKAN LANDFILLS

Landfill gas is an important factor which causes odor and firing and provides information on the stability of the waste in landfill sites. Although many studies have investigated landfill gas composition, those in tropical region or uncontrolled landfills are limited. Uncontrolled final disposal of the municipal solid waste is commonly observed in Sri Lanka, so that it would cause environmental burdens such as odor and firing. In this study, the relationship between landfill gas composition and buried waste characterization was investigated to reveal factors determining landfill gas composition in Sri Lankan landfill sites.
