摘要

Non-optimized waste collection services cause environmental problems related to Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. Innovation, and Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) tools can optimize waste collection and lead waste management systems to a more sustainable model. This paper examines and analyses the benefits deriving from the implementation of such technologies in cities and regions, and investigates the barriers and opportunities from their implementation. In particular, the paper investigates the application of the LIFE+ project tittled LIFE EWAS “Efficient and sustainable waste management methodologies using ICT tools enabling GHG emission reduction” in the cities of Seville and Chania. The project has been developed to highlight successful waste prevention and collection ICT activities in order to promote their wider adoption across Europe. EWAS expected results are innovative waste management methodologies based on advanced ICT tools that will reduce GHG emissions by over 10%, noise pollution, and costs.
