RECOVERY OF PLASTICS FROM MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE IN MATERIALS RECOVERY FACILITIES

The European waste directive 2008/98/EC states that the member states should prepare an amount of 50% of the plastic wastes from households or similar sources for re-use or recycling until 2020. Plastic packaging wastes represent approximately 60% of the plastic wastes and are therefore of special interest to the recycling efforts. Source separation systems are favoured but other options are possible and can already be found in Austria, Spain, France and The Netherlands. The performance of these alternative options to source separation schemes is not well described.
