We developed and field validated a site-specific annual GHG (greenhouse gas) inventory model for landfill CH4 emissions that incorporates both soil profile properties and microclimate modeling coupled to 0.5° scale global climate models. Based on 1D diffusion, CALMIM (CAlifornia Landfill Methane Inventory Model) is a freely available JAVA tool which models a typical annual cycle for CH4 emissions from site specific daily, intermediate, and final landfill covers at any landfill site worldwide. This new approach, which is compliant with IPCC "Tier III" criteria, was originally field validated at two California sites (Monterey County; Los Angeles County), with limited field validation at three additional California sites. In addition to default values for general GHG inventory purposes, CALMIM permits user selectable parameters for more rigorous site-specific applications. We report here on CALMIM improvements (now compatible with PC, MAC, and UNIX platforms) as well as selected results from the expanded international field validation for the current model (CALMIM 5.2).
