PRE-TREATMENT AND REUSE OF MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE INCINERATION (MSWI) RESIDUES

The integrated solid waste management hierarchy as established by the European Union if organized based on five distinct steps: waste prevention, reuse, recovery and recycling of materials, waste incineration with energy recovery and final disposal on landfill of residues. In 2011 a total amount of 5.3 million tons of MSW was processed in thermal treatment plants in Italy, corresponding to about 17% of the total production compared to an amount of 13.2 million tons (46% of the total) that was disposed of in landfill. Current Italian legislation establishes that wastes with lower heating values (LHV) > 13.000 kJ/kg have to be processed in a thermal treatment plant by 31st December 2013. This will determine an increase in the amount of waste currently processed in thermal treatment plants.
