Methane emissions from landfills and their effect on climate change are of serious concern. On the other hand landfills for mechanically biologically treated (MBT) wastes may serve as a carbon sink. For both effects knowledge about long term behaviour (gas production and carbon mineralisation respectively) is of interest. Current models for biogas generation that focus on the economic use of the landfill gas, usually are based on first order chemical reactions (exponential decay). Because exponential decay underestimates the long-term emissions of landfills a new model was investigated by Tintner et al. (2011).
