Leachate characteristics present high variability due to several factors among which the main are the landfill operation, waste age, and climatic conditions. Sanitary landfill leachates, if not properly managed, are a great environmental concern because of the high pollutant concentrations. Refuse decomposition in landfills follows a series of phases in which chemical, physical and biological properties of the buried wastes undergo to large variations. During landfill aging, the concentration of organic compounds into leachate normally decreases and becomes less biodegradable, whereas ammonia concentration tends to increase.
