DEVELOPING SOLUTIONS FOR NATIONAL END-OF-WASTE CRITERIA FOR AGGREGATES FROM INERT WASTE IN THE UK

The value of recovered aggregates in the UK is worth a potential ?3.9bn over the next ten years, but how does the UK unlock and realise this potential? To begin, the UK started a programme of work to develop national end-of-waste (EoW) criteria for aggregates in 2003; this deals with the production of aggregates from inert construction, demolition and excavation waste. The purpose of national level EoW criteria is to provide a uniform control process for producers, from which they can reasonably state and demonstrate that their product has been fully recovered and is no longer a waste. It also provides purchasers with a quality-managed product to common standards, which increases confidence in performance. For the period 2011 to 2020 the aggregates EoW criteria is anticipated to deliver across England, Northern Ireland and Wales; 187,723,300 tonnes of material diverted from landfill, 368,630,200 tonnes of virgin material saved, carbon(e) savings of 938,600 tonnes; accruing the potential net benefit of ?3.9bn over ten years.
