One of nowadays most important waste is plastic. It is consumed in such a high proportion in packing and packaging applications that every day thousands of tones of plastics are disposed of. In Europe about 20 million tons of such waste is generated per year. The EU legislation (Packing and Packaging Waste Directive 2004/12/CE) obliges to valorise (energy recover + recycling) 60 % of the packing and packaging waste, with at least 55-85 % recycling. For this to be possible industrial separation and classification plants, which receive the municipal packing and packaging waste is being operated on an industrial scale in many EU countries.
