Modern landfill design should aim to achieve an equilibrium with the environment in a sustainable way. Sustainability of a bioreactor landfill, being one of the newest trends in disposal of municipal solid waste, still remains a challenge. Accumulation of ammoniacal nitrogen in such a landfill, due to the leachate recirculation, can posses a hazard to the environment and prolong the period of landfill aftercare.
