The importance of the waste management problem and the necessity of environmental protection led us to the establishment of broad range of regulations and laws governing the system of collection, transportation, disposal and treatment of wastes. In Greece, the main disposal method of the household solid wastes is the sanitary landfill disposition. Thus, according to E.D. 99/31 About Wastes Sanitary Landfilling and the goals that have been set in European as well as in National level and the National Waste Management Strategy (C.M.D 50910/2727/2003) the Biodegradable Municipal Solid Wastes delivered to final disposal up to 2010 must be reduced in the 75% of the Biodegradable Municipal Solid Wastes produced during the year 1995, and gradually, until 2020, must be further reduced reaching the amount of 35% of the Biodegradable Municipal Solid Wastes produced in 1995. In addition, concerning of the packaging wastes, is set the gradual increase of their recycling and reuse amount, thus up to 2011 must be reclaim the 60% and be recycled the 55% of those wastes.
