RECLAMATION OF A POLLUTED SITE WITHIN AN URBAN CENTRE AND CONCURRENT MANAGEMENT OF A CEMENT ASBESTOS LANDFILL: A BEST PRACTICE

The present study regards former sand and gravel pits which served as a special waste disposal site until 1986. The site was subsequently authorized to receive inert waste, and remained inactive from 1992 to 1996. Starting in February 1997, thanks to a new authorization to receive inert waste -including rubble containing cement asbestos - the site was subjected to two different reclamation projects. Both projects were carried out without recourse to public funds as they were entirely funded by a private company which purchased the authorization in 1997. The author of this study was in charge of the technical management of the company from 1997 until the closure of the landfill in 2009 and the subsequent sealing phase, which lasted until autumn 2010.
