GLYCERIN RELATED PREMATURE PLUGGING OF FUEL FILTERS: REVISITING GLYCERIN SOLUBILITY LIMITS

The introduction of biodiesel to the world-wide fuel market over the last 15 years has forced rapid adaption by fuel manufacturers, distributors, and end-users. In this report we document even though the biodiesel market is relatively mature, problems regarding fuel chemistry persist. We document how biodiesel manufactured according to the current ASTM D6751-12 standard is able to rapidly foul high efficiency fuel filter through precipitation of glycerin. Through traditional analytical chemistry techniques we demonstrate that allowable amount of glycerin in B100 should be significantly lowered.
