The present work is based on a case study of a coal ashlandfill, focusing on the evidence of groundwatercontamination (acid drainage and high levels of sulfates,aluminum, manganese, zinc, iron and nickel) revealed bythe periodic monitoring that has been carried on during thelast years. The treatment of the available informationallowed the development of the site conceptual modelusing the Groundwater Modelling System (GMS) software.After sampling, laboratory tests were performed tocharacterize, neutralize and sequentially precipitate themain metals underground using water collected frompiezometers of the monitoring net,. The mathematicalsimulation of groundwater flow, combined with the resultsof laboratory tests, allowed to establish appropriatedtreatment alternatives for this case study.
