The silvopasture has been recognized as a possiblegreenhouse gas mitigation strategy under the KyotoProtocol due to the potential for carbon storage in multipleplant species and in the soil. Soil organic matter (SOM)represents the most important pool of carbon storage interrestrial ecosystems and can be modify among otherfactor by the fertilisation. The objective of this experimentwas to evaluate during five years the evolution of SOM ina silvopastoral system established with Eucalyptus nitensMaiden in Galicia (NW Spain) and fertilised with sewagesludge that has been stabilised using anaerobic digestion,composting, and pelletisation. The results showed that theSOM gradually decreased from the second year of thestudy probably due to the fertilisation and the ploughing ofthe soil but also due to a negative effect of the trees on thebiological activity in the soil. Therefore, the afforestationwith Eucalyptus not served its task to soil carbonsequestration compared with other tree species establishedin silvopastoral systems in the same area and it isnecessary to continue our study to properly evaluate theeffect of Eucalyptus on the SOM.
