Industrial waste water effluents, particularly from mineral processing, metal plating, electric, electronic and chemical industries are environmentally unacceptable since it is contaminated with many toxic metal ions including cadmium. The most common form of effluent treatment involves the precipitation as hydroxide, basic salt or sulphides, but the products are rarely processed for recovery and for dilute streams; generally, this method is expensive. Solvent extraction and ion exchange allow the recovery, but are rarely used because of the high capital and operating costs when compared to the value of materials recovered from its trace level. The membrane based process, especially hollow fiber strip dispersion (HFSD) technology, shows the potential application for processing of effluent containing micro level of metal pollutants. This paper presents results of solvent extraction for Cd(II) using Cyanex 923 as an extractant. Based on the solvent extraction data, the effect of [H~+] and [Cl~] ions were examined in order to optimize the performance of HFSD technique for the extraction/recovery of Cd(ll) from its low level at acidic as well as neutral chloride medium..
