As an actively prograding sub-delta of the greater Mississippi River Delta, the Wax Lake Delta is viewed as an natural lab for land-building processes that can be harnessed elsewhere in the region. The delta can be exposed to several processes, such as tropical or winter storms, which can produce significant storm surges that influence the delta morphology. That is why since Hurricane Katrina, the delta has drawn great deal of attention as a model for delta regrowth in the Mississippi River Delta to restore habitat and protect against land loss.
