This paper presents a control method for maximum power point tracking (MPPT) of a wind energy conversion system (WECS) using online parameter identification. The WECS is based on a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) and transmits its electrical power to an AC grid through an AC-DC-AC converter system with IGBT pulse-width modulation (PWM) converters. The generator-side converter optimally controls the torque of the PMSG to extract maximum wind power. On the other hand, the grid-side inverter controls the DC-link and grid voltages for stable operation of the WECS. Since an optimum torque of the PMSG may vary due to wind turbulence, parameter error, and other unexpected conditions, the optimum torque of the PMSG is determined by using the online parameter identification in this paper. The proposed method provides WECS operation with the maximum efficiency and economical benefit. Effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by the numerical simulations.
