Until the end of 2005 shipping had a world-wide common max. sulphur cap of 4,5% and in 2006/2007 the SECAs in Northern Europe (North- and Baltic Sea) with a significant reduction (max. 1,5%) were installed. Since 2010 the cap is furthermore reduced to 1,0% in the Northland Baltic Sea (incl. the English Channel) and Northern American SECAs and in European ports a sulphur content higher than 0,1% has been prohibited. A result of these reductions is for example a drastic reduction of emission loads at the German Baltic Sea, proved by measurements of the Federal Institutions in Rostock-Wamemunde and Zingst showing very low sulphur levels, far below the 2005 defined cap levels for the protection of human health of 125μg/m~3 (= > < 4 - 8μg/m~3)!
