Investigation was carried out on RTMable BMI-matrix laminated composites reinforced with continuous carbon fibers. To increase the interlaminar toughness and the impact damage tolerance, an innovative proprietary toughening technology, so-called Ex-situ concept was applied using thermoplastic polyetherketone component. It showed that all the important interlaminar properties were improved and the in-plane properties remain less affected. Characteristic interlaminar structure and phase morphology was found responsible for this improvement. An understanding of the temperature-time-transformation (TTT) behavior of the thermoplastic modified BMI was helpful for establishment of the characteristic interlaminar structure.
