REGULATORY DRIVERS AND IMPACTS ON OPPORTUNITIES FOR WATER REUSE IN SMALL RURAL AREAS OF THE CENTRAL VALLEY OF CALIFORNIA

Water reuse in the Central Valley and Sierra Foothills of California has been characterized by relatively large agricultural reuse systems in the valley and relatively small spray disposal systems in the foothills. California has a new Recycled Water Policy with a goal of increasing the use of recycled water over the 2002 levels by at least one million acre-feet by 2020. The policy focuses on urban landscape irrigation using disinfected tertiary recycled water. One of the opportunities for increased water reuse is the agricultural irrigation of forage crops in the Central Valley and Sierra Foothills.
