The international standard of safety evaluation tests of lithium-ion batteries in vehicles is under consideration. Therefore, to obtain data for standardization, we conducted four types of evaluation: electrical tests, mechanical tests, environmental tests, and a fire test. Here, we report on the environmental tests results. From the various environmental tests methods, high-temperature endurance, temperature-cycling, thermal-shock cycling, and dewing tests were chosen. Result of the high-temperature endurance test indicated that developmental events were affected by elevated temperature processes in the case of identical cells. Results of the temperature-cycling and thermal-shock cycling tests indicated that all cells swelled and voltage decreased. Results of the dewing test indicated that capacities decreased, probably due to the impact of heat; however, insulation performance was maintained. These results suggest new problems with lithium-ion batteries in vehicles for safety evaluation tests standardization.
