The effects of in-channel electromagnetic interference (EMI) on the behavior and performance of a modern ultra high frequency (UHF) radio frequency identification (RFID) system are here investigated and assessed. In particular, meaningful results from experiments are summarized and commented with the aim of highlighting the importance of EMI issues in the design and setup of UHF RFID systems. Experiments have been conducted on a suitably arranged testbed configured in such a way as to emulate a typical identification process of items within a given volume. The testbed includes a real-life UHF RFID reader and a set of EPCglobal Gen-2 Class-1 tags. Measurements are accomplished in terms of system efficiency, intended as percentage of correctly identified tags.
