Relaxin in Acute Decompensated Heart Failure

Relaxin is a polypeptide hormone structurally similar to insulin but with different metabolic effects. In females, it is produced by the corpus luteum and in males it is produced by the prostate gland. Relaxin mediates the physiologic and anatomic changes associated with pregnancy. Relaxin was discovered in 1926, named in 1930, and sequenced during the 1970s. Relaxin genes were discovered and animal studies were initiated in the 1980s. Relaxin receptors were discovered in 2002. The first heart failure trial was published in 2009.
