Within the framework of an Italian research project aimed at ground motion prediction and shakemap generation in the near-field region of an earthquake, an accelerometer network has been installed in Tarcento (Friuli Venezia Giulia, NE Italy), a town heavily damaged by the 1976 - 77 Friuli earthquake sequence. The accelerometer network consists of three K2 distributed over a linear array of about 1.5 km length. Tarcento was chosen, at the end of the Seventies, as the site for a pilot microzonation study characterized by a relevant number of field and laboratory experiments realized with the scope of evaluating the geophysical and mechanical properties of the alluvial subsoils and bedrock, and to investigate the 3D geometry of the alluvium basin. The earthquake data recently obtained allow for review of some of the quantitative predictions put forward in the study of 1980, and provide information of more general interest on the seismic response of 3D alluvium valleys.
