This paper presents a study conducted to evaluate the effect of soil-foundation-structure interaction (SFSI) on the seismic performance of a dual wall-riveted steel frame building. A three-dimensional numerical model of the building including the subsoil-foundation system was developed using an inelastic dynamic structural analysis program. The subsoil stiffness and damping properties were modelled using nonlinear springs and dashpots with properties inferred from a three-dimensional geological model of the Wellington CBD, together with geotechnical tests conducted at nearby sites. Hysteretic behaviour of each component was incorporated as realistically as possible. The nonlinear dynamic analyses were conducted at three different levels of seismic loadings using a suite of seven ground motion records relevant to the seismicity of the building location SFSI reduced the responses in the direction where the walls carry the majority of the lateral loads. However, it had a detrimental effect on the overall seismic performance of the building.
