An antiseismic prompt safety intervention proposal on the San Francisco del Baron Church in Valparaiso (Chile)

The work firstly grew in the Project "MAR VASTO" ("Risk Management in Valparaiso/Manejo de Riesgos en Valparaiso", 2007 - 2008, managed by ENEA with funds of BID, "Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo"). It saw the participation of Italian (Universities of Ferrara, Padova and Trieste) and Chilean (University Federico Santa Maria in Valparaiso and University of Chile in Santiago) partners, and the support of local stakeholders. Being Valparaiso UNESCO patrimony since 2003, "MAR VASTO" provided, among several activities, survey and vulnerability analyses of three historical churches (San Francisco del Baron, Las Hermanas de la Providencia, La Matriz). A worrying damage due to past earthquakes was found in San Francisco del Baron, such as to put it in danger in case of future strong seismic events. Therefore, as a second step, a safety prompt intervention study, regarding church fa?ade and bell-tower, was carried out and delivered to Chilean Authorities (Franciscans, Archbishop, Regional Government, Valparaiso Municipality) by the Italian team on a voluntary basis. The study calculated collapse mechanisms, suggested strengthening interventions, and provided cost estimate.
